ABSTRACT

It is time to learn something about statistics. You do not yet need to learn how to calculate standard deviations and correlation coefficients, but you should know what they are and how they are used. Otherwise much of psychology must be taken on faith, which is no way to become a scientist. We have already referred to control groups, whose use requires statistics, and the chapter about intelligence that follows this one will require even more statistics. So now is a good time to explain the nature of statistical thought.
