ABSTRACT

This chapter draws on the expertise of several theorists and specialists with regard to understanding trauma and its overall effect on the learning process. Children who are wounded need a different level of understanding for people to have successful outcomes in and out of the classroom. Viewing trauma through the lens of a fight, flight, or freeze response gives a sharpened sense of the body's reaction to a traumatic event. Research suggests that unresolved trauma can manifest itself as post traumatic stress disorder. Most current research supports the notion that early childhood traumatic experiences affect one's lifelong learning. It is suggested that teachers and school counselors would understand trauma responses from children better if they were provided with proper training on what they can expect from children of trauma. Bullying prevention and intervention play vital roles in helping to protect wounded children, as well as keeping students from experiencing trauma at an early age.
