ABSTRACT
The “tools” approach in this book is meant to stress that speakers and writers are active designers and builders. They are making things, acting on others and on the world, and simultaneously reproducing social order, institutions, and cultures. They are making history as they enact and recognize—and thereby keep alive—a great variety of different Discourses, different ways of being in the world, different ways of being certain kinds of people.
