ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book has broadly defined violence in and around schools. Keeping schools safe is not, and should not be, merely about preventing school violence. However, staff, parents, and students should be prepared to deal with all aspects of school violence including bullying, alcohol and drug use, youth gambling, sexuality, and Internet safety. Schools need to prepare for any eventuality, including the possibility of violence. Being prepared is about the school organization, the school infrastructure, and individuals. School violence is the inevitable result of bringing large numbers of culturally and ethnically diverse people together in a confined space. In our changing society, students bring their problems into schools, and schools need to address these problems before instruction can take place. Children need adults whom they can trust, who have been properly trained, and who are prepared to respond to the issue of school violence.
