ABSTRACT

Gambling has become so engrained in the American landscape that it has become transparent-invisible. Legalized gambling is a socially acceptable, widely promoted activity. In the past, gambling was recognized as an adult pastime. In recent years, it has increased signifi cantly among young people who have grown up in a society where it is legal and widely accepted. Movies, television shows, the widespread casino movement, and increased access to gaming through the Internet have increased the availability of gambling. States run legal lotteries. Casinos exist in most states. Las Vegas and Atlantic City have become destination cities. Gambling on sporting events is an accepted part of sports. Internet gambling brings in almost $30 billion annually (www.americangaming.org/sites/default/fi les/ uploads/docs/fi nal_online_gambling_white_paper_5-18-11.pdf).
