ABSTRACT

Use social language every day to interact with one another: ask for directions, share news, tell stories, and make appointments. Students develop a strong command of interpersonal language, often within a year or two of being immersed in English, as there are plenty of opportunities for social interaction both in and outside the school setting. Prefixes, root words and suffixes are small, meaningful parts of words that can help English Language Learners (ELLs) to recognize more vocabulary. Knowing the meaning of prefixes and suffixes helps students expand their vocabulary and become better at “guessing” the meaning of words based on their parts. Homonyms are feature of the English language that proves confusing to both ELLs and native English speakers alike. Homonyms are divided into homophones and homographs. Once ELLs acquire some vocabulary, it is time to put the words into phrases and sentences.
