ABSTRACT

The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is as much a part of the culture of Alaska as Mardi Gras is of New Orleans. The high school principal in McGrath, one of the race checkpoints, once said that their town only observes three holidays—Christmas, the Fourth of July, and Iditarod. When I learned that the race is covered on the Web in real time for two weeks every March, I thought it would be a great project for my general math students. Caught up in following the race, they could learn how to interpret data in various kinds of tables and graphs, and at the same time we could explore the geography and culture of Alaska.
