How Is Writing Reinvented?
The traditional group report as done since word processors began was for each partner to take a part. Wikis are unique. There is not anything quite like a wiki in traditional writing. It brings unprecedented capabilities for cooperative learning projects that help teachers engage every writer. By tracking revisions, facilitating discussions, and allowing the embedding of a variety of media, wikis allow almost everything but simultaneous editing, a feature that is being worked on as this chapter is being written. Wikis can be used 'to change the individualism culture of traditional instruction to one of collaboration and shared construction of knowledge'. The wiki, because of the widespread use in academia and sites like Wikipedia, is a foundational tool in the collaborative writing tool chest. Other tools like Google Sites and Weebly are loosely based upon wikis and are ways to build websites together with students.
