Neo-Marxist approaches to leisure

The 'crisis' of western Marxism has been the subject of consider­ able discussion (see Anderson 1976; Alvater and Kallscheuer 1979; Callinicois 1982). The issue is rather involved and I do not propose to attempt a detailed survey of the terrain here. Even so, it is important to try and establish the rudiments of what is at stake. For the neo-Marxist approaches that I shall investigate in this chapter have gestated and matured in the context of the crisis in Marxist thought. The essential points can be stated in a few words.
