ABSTRACT

So far, we have presented key concepts, best practices, techniques, and tools to help you drive employee engagement through effective performance management. We have focused on the positive concept of engagement and what you can do to help employees feel more engaged at work. In an ideal world, this would be sufficient; however, certain factors and conditions in the workplace can negatively affect employee engagement in your organization, and in fact can lead your employees down the opposite path-to burnout, low performance, and withdrawal. Consequently, it is crucial for you to understand burnout, including its personal and organizational consequences, its major causes, how to undo the damage (alleviate burnout and create a more engaging work environment), and how to prevent burnout. You will find that much of what we have discussed throughout this book in support of employee engagement-the concept, ideas, strategies, techniques, and so on-will be found in this chapter, and are shown to be effective in helping to prevent and eliminate burnout.
