ABSTRACT
The development of people with intellectual disability is influenced by the balance of risk and protective factors in their lives. The growth of sensory, motor, cognitive, linguistic and social competencies over the lifespan occurs within the context of the family lifecycle. These issues are the focus of this chapter.
