ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors describe a study which compares the training, implementation and outcomes of a motivational interviewing approach versus a confrontational approach in a coercive setting. They report perceptions of the effectiveness of the approach, differences in delivery between motivational interviewing and a standard approach and in outcome between the two approaches. In the Italian legislative system, personal use of illegal drugs is a misdemeanour, not a criminal offence. Minor violations such as using or merely owning small amounts of illegal substances for personal use, although forbidden, are not punished by arrest or incarceration. A law passed by the Italian Government which came into force in 2006 reintroduces criminal prosecution for the possession of drugs for personal use. The ban on the personal use of illegal drugs is enforced through a modification in the police summons to the Uffici Territoriali del Governo (UTG) drug unit.
