ABSTRACT
Life in a secure unit may be considered from a number of different perspectives but these must include the particular and individual stories of the adults and young people who work and live there. These accounts, if taken seriously, inform the development of ideas about effective practice and management in a particularly powerful way. The voices of residential staff and young people both tend to get lost in the general hubbub that passes for debate about the role and purpose of secure accommodation for young people.
