Managing Relationships

Relationship management is a central task in any family, but there are more relationships to manage, and often more problematic ones, in stepfamilies. The subject of this chapter underlies all of the other chapters, since everything else that occurs in families depends on the relationships between the members. Relationships outside the household are important, too, because when a stepfamily is first formed the network support is often low and the extended family relationships often strained (Whiteside, 1982). In this chapter rela tionships within families, relationships with ex-spouses and their families, and relationships with extended family and the social net work are all addressed.
