ABSTRACT

SUMMARY. Both active and recovering alcoholics face genuine HIV-reiated risks. Additional risks exist for women alcoholics. Because of the serious nature of HIV disease, it is essential that recovery providers address HIV prevention in their work. Providers are encouraged to develop skills for discussing sexuality and HIV with women in recovery. Five principles are described, applicable to both individual and group work, which help establish a framework for discussions of sexuality and HIV in the context of recovery. Additionally, programs and providers are urged to direct attention to the issues of HIV positive women in recovery, including building skills in self-advocacy and assertiveness.
