ABSTRACT

The study spanned 15 months from November, 1987, to February, 1989. This time span predated the passage of the Massachusetts Gay Rights Law which protects the employment rights of lesbian and gay teachers. After an initial group meeting in November to introduce partici pants, describe the project, and sign consent forms, each participant sched uled time for a 90-minute individual interview with one of the researchers (who also interviewed each other). These open-ended interviews focused on the question, “What is it like to be a gay/lesbian educator?” All inter views were audio-taped and then transcribed verbatim. Interviewing and transcribing continued through December and the first part of January.
