ABSTRACT

Each disorder in this section is characterized by psychosis; however, the term psychotic is interpreted in different ways. It is broadest in Schizophrenia, Schizophreniform Disorder, Schizoaffective Disorder, and Brief Psychotic Disorder, in which psychotic refers to delusions, hallucinations, and bizarre or disorganized speech or behavior. In Psychotic Disorder Due to a General Medical Condition and in Substance-Induced Psychotic Disorder, psychotic implies delusions and hallucinations (in the latter diagnosis, only those hallucinations not accompanied by insight). In Delusional Disorder, it refers only to delusions.
