ABSTRACT

In producing this volume it has been our intention to assist researchers in meeting their responsibilities to conduct ethical, scientifically defensible, and humane research. Aware of the many obstacles that have impeded mental illness research in children and adolescents, we attempted to strike an appropriate balance between the objectives of enabling scientifically rigorous research, and the humanitarian standards of beneficence, respect for persons, and justice. Moreover, we have been guided by the perspective that, particularly in the case of children, we as investigators “do no harm.”
