ABSTRACT

It was a busy Saturday afternoon in February and the covered market in Aberdeen, Scotland was packed. Pauline, then aged 2 years 10 months was on a shopping trip with her mother when she wandered off and disappeared. The police were alerted and some 80 officers combed the area looking for clues to her whereabouts. After a sleepless night for her parents, Pauline was found the next morning wandering in a distressed condition in a local park. The parents' joy at being reunited with their child turned to anger when they discovered that she had been beaten and severely burned as well as indecently assaulted.
