ABSTRACT

According to Statistics Canada, 9.7% of Canada's population in 1981 was 65 years of age and older. It is projected that by the year 2000, 11% will be elderly, and by the year 2031, 21% will be elderly. Canada is not unique in this regard, these projected changes in the proportion of the population are representative of the rapid increase in the numbers of elderly people in the western world.
