Field Clusters Online

This chapter describes how an online course used interactive exercises to engage students in mutual exploration of cross and/or interdisciplinary work. Most human service practitioners believe that students should be exposed to education programs with a technological delivery. Human service education in the field of social work, nursing, child and youth care, and education has experienced a profound transformation over the past decade. There is no face-to-face interaction in this course although traditional telephone consultation between instructor and students does occur. Human and Social Development: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Working with Children and Families is delivered over a single thirteen-week semester, and is offered twice a year. The course takes places in the "virtual classroom" of an online environment and was designed for distance delivery using a Web Course Tools (WebCT) interface. WebCT is a course management system that provides a set of functions and tools for creating and facilitating web-based learning environments.
