ABSTRACT

Dually diagnosed individuals who want to learn to stop reaching outside of themselves for pleasure and to cultivate a solid inner core of peace need opportunities to develop hope and spirituality. Many dually diagnosed people who have managed to create this inner core of peace and serenity consider it a miracle. The concept of spirituality has long been central in twelve-step recovery circles. It is, in fact, the basis of the “miracle” that allows people who are addicted to refrain, one day at a time, from engaging in an obsession that has been destroying them. People who seek recovery from addiction often, in the beginning, confuse the concept of spirituality with religion. Sometimes the greater the suffering, the higher the level of spirituality. Perhaps the need for a higher power becomes greatest when individuals have no other choice but to surrender on a daily basis.
