ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a group therapy model for addressing spiritual issues that arise following terrorist disasters. It defines religion as "a system of beliefs, values, rituals, and practices shared in common by a social community as a means of experiencing and connecting with the sacred or divine." The chapter also describes therapeutic techniques for addressing spiritual issues that arise following a traumatic event such as a terrorist disaster and for helping survivors utilize spiritual resources as part of their healing process. It focuses on the therapeutic group interventions for survivors, including families of victims of terrorist disasters, that focus on the interrelationship of spirituality and the impact of a terrorist disaster. Terrorist disasters, because they are sometimes perpetrated by individuals of one religion against members of other religious groups, may uniquely and powerfully raise religious and spiritual concerns and questions among survivors.
