ABSTRACT

Logotherapy is very useful in dealing with a person with a terminal illness in that such a person often feels that life is meaningless. Viktor Frankl asserts that each person's life has a unique meaning even when the person is confronted with a terminal condition over which he/she seemingly has little control. This chapter the various ways by which meaning may be discovered through the methods of logotherapy. Logotherapy is a system of therapy introduced by Frankl, a Viennese psychiatrist. Logotherapy is based on three concepts: the freedom of will the will to meaning and the meaning of life. Logotherapy focuses on the future, on the meanings yet to be fulfilled by the patient even when they feel as though life has no further meaning. In logotherapy, man is viewed as being comprised of three dimensions-the physical, the psychological and the spiritual.
