ABSTRACT

The growing population of elder adults in the United States include those diagnosed with MR/DD. Their presence in the community results from governmental policy changes, leading to community based health and residential services. This article will focus on the challenges facing the elder adult with MR/DD “aging in place.” Perspectives of care for persons with MR/DD, both historical and contemporary, will be reviewed. Challenges that are experienced by this population, their families and the service community are described and the role of occupational and physical therapists in assisting the elder adult to “age in place” in the community is presented.
