ABSTRACT

Many women suffer violence at home over many years before doing anything about it. In the same year, there were 5,800 applications to Magistrates’ Courts for exclusion orders prohibiting men from entering the matrimonial home and for non-molestation or protection orders. The opening of Women’s Aid refuges has provided an important measure of violence against women in the home. Many wanted to get a job or to undertake some kind of educational training -more had ambitions centred on their children for whom they wished to make a ‘nice and happy home’. The report recommended that a pilot scheme first be introduced to improve police training for dealing with violence in the home and to give better support systems to the victims of this violence. Violence was a regular part of this marriage, a marriage which seemed to have no chance of success from the beginning.
