ABSTRACT
Mechanical theories reduce the universe to a vortex of corpuscles colliding with each other according to immutable laws. It has been humorously said, and not altogether unjustly, that these theories consist in supposing that a supreme intelligence—God—in contemplating the world, would have approximately the same sensation as we experience in the presence of a game of billiards.
