ABSTRACT

Scientific understanding is what scientists show in their own fields in physics and in biology. The scientific outlook, need not be confined to the special inquiries of science. Science does tell us a great deal about the world around us. This chapter suggests that the influence of science is chiefly in the spread of its methods and in the increasing trust in them. The serious pursuit of science in any community may have an influence for the growth of culture and of understanding. Even men of science have made claims for the outlook latterly that are extravagant and shallow. This chapter explains that friendships may be imperfect, and perhaps infantile; or they may show maturity as nothing else can. There are difficulties and problems in friendship, and the growth of an adult outlook comes largely in connection with them.
