ABSTRACT

Introduction In this chapter I shall be examining St Augustine's use of the phrases 'of the same substance', 'in the same substance', 'in one substance', with subsidiary reference to 'in respect of substance', 'in respect to substance' and the notion that the substance of the Father is the Father Himself. A detailed examination of these phrases is required, for it will be my contention that such concepts as they express cannot have any place in talk about the persons of the Trinity. Their use in this context is nonsensical, and what is of interest is that such a use is necessarily nonsensical. These concepts have only been thought to be employable in such a connection on account of certain errors which I shall attempt to expose.
