ABSTRACT
Viewing Ibn al-RumI's madf~ for 'Ubaydallah b. 'Abdallah as a literary speech situation allows one to isolate the components of its dramaturgy, namely (a) the dramatis personae and their characterizations, especially the persona of the panegyrist, (b) the typology of the scenes, and (c) the articulation of an ethics of patronage.
