ABSTRACT

It is common in scientific endeavour for a tradition of research or scholarly activity to be neglected or ignored. It is possible to find ‘scholarly astigmatism’ in most academic disciplines. To date there has been very little work in the history of ideas in sports science discourse. Hoberman (1992) has provided an excellent example of what such work encompasses. Elsewhere, I have developed a history of ideas approach to performance analysis (Lyons, 1994; 1996).
