ABSTRACT

The majority of the body’s physiological systems are stressed during the course of a soccer game and often also by a strenuous training programme. These include metabolic energy systems (Saltin, 1973), the musculoskeletal system and perhaps also the nervous and immune systems (Reilly, 1999). Following training or competitive matches there is a need to switch attention to regenerative processes so that the player regains capabilities in readiness for the next engagement. This is particularly applicable to professionals who may be obliged to play more than one full game within the same week.
