ABSTRACT

Participation of females in soccer has increased enormously in recent years and in many countries is the fastest growing competitive sport. Not until the 1980s was the women’s game actively promoted. It gained international credibility in 1991 when the first World Cup for women’s teams was held in China. Whilst there has been a steep rise in women’s soccer clubs throughout the 1990s, in many countries women’s participation in sports, and particularly field games, is restricted by cultural, domestic and economic circumstances.
