ABSTRACT

The continual growth and interest in sport has created enormous demand for sports officials. This has resulted in coaches and administrators, at all levels of sport, constantly seeking people who are competent at officiating (Clegg and Thompson, 1993). However, it would seem that the determination of what constitutes a competent official, and their subsequent identification and development, is far more complex than simply finding someone who exhibits a thorough knowledge of game rules (Brown, 1993).
