ABSTRACT

Sport managers are working in an ever increasing competitive environment. There are more rival sports, playing for longer seasons with both the consumer dollar and the Government’s dollar being harder to extract. Government agencies in particular are less willing to see the “intrinsic worth” of sport and its concomitant future health benefits due to what is considered to be age of economic rationalism. Sporting bodies are now regularly being asked to justify their demands on the public purse for demonstrable community benefit, economic soundness and profitability. Good health, fun and the odd win are not seen as either politically correct or adequate performance indicators when compared to cold indicators.
