ABSTRACT

The Youth Training Scheme (YTS) became operational in September 1983. In May 1990, Youth Training (YT) was introduced to replace YTS. Throughout the British economy, substantial numbers of young people in apprenticeships were subsidised by these schemes. In professional soccer in England and Wales, the former ‘ad hoc’ system of “apprenticeships” was replaced by a more uniform, systematic programme of both general and specific training compatible with the aims of the YTS then YT schemes.
