ABSTRACT

The characteristic of being a fire-breathing serpent, or of being mistress of the Duke of Bletchley, applies to nothing in the world. Mentality and materiality are both differentiating attributes which can belong to the same substance. Reductive Materialism or Behaviourism is a theory holds that there really are material objects, and that materiality is a differentiating attribute. The Behaviourist has to show that mental and bodily events are connected as incidents in the life of Augustus and incidents in the life of the second Roman emperor are connected. Berkeley materiality is a delusive characteristic, in the sense in which the characteristic of being a mermaid is delusive. Of these theories I believe that Pure Mentalism, both in its less radical Berkeleian form and in the more radical form in which it is held by Leibniz, Hegel and M 'Taggart, may be rejected.
