ABSTRACT

David M. Clark (1996) describes the evolution of his model of panic disorder. This model has been hailed as an exemplar of clear, research-based and empirically tested model building: not only of the causes but also of the treatment of panic. Clark explains how he built his approach on the research model developed by Beck, ®rstly, in his research on depression and then later in other areas. This research model has undoubtedly been in¯uential in increasing rigour in psychotherapy research. It has also been characterised by a strong ethical concern not to make claims for any form of treatment before ef®cacy research has shown it to be effective.
