Beck and his colleagues have worked hard to develop the measurement of competence in cognitive therapy:

The system of psychotherapeutic techniques is clearly and explicitly de®ned in our cognitive therapy treatment manuals, especially in the manual for the treatment of depression. The uniformity of treatment procedures has been con®rmed by monitoring the interviews (by means of tape recordings) of the psychotherapists in our training research program.
