ForthispurposeIshallfirstcharacterizetheoldprofessionalethics,and perhapscaricatureitalittle,inordertocompareandcontrastitlaterwith thenewprofessionalethicsthatIpropose.Shouldthisnewethicsturnout tobeabetterguideforhumanconductthanthetraditionalethicsofthe intellectualprofessions-theethicsofscientists,physicians,lawyers, engineers,architects,andalsocivilservants,andmostimportantly,the ethicsofpoliticians-thenImaybeallowedtoclaimthatnewthingscan belearnteveninthefieldofethics.
