ABSTRACT

Theseprinciplesmean,ofcourse,againthatthereisnorealchange.If thecauseequalstheeffect,thenthisequalityshowsthattherereallyisno change,nointrinsicvariation,butthatsomethingremainsidenticalwith itselfthroughoutthecausalprocess.ItisinthiswaythatParmenidean rationalismledtothetheoryofinvariants,andtothetheorythatall exRlanationofchangemustexplainchangeaway(asEmileMeyersonputs it8 ),notnecessarilyasanillusion,butatanyratebypointingtothat realitythatdoesnotchangeduringchange.Consequentlythisunchanging realityisnotitselfinneedofexplanation.Sotheremustbelawsofall change,andtheselawsmustbeexpressibleintheformofequalities;that is,asequations.Andthereisbutonerealitybehind,andexplaining,the immensevarietyofexperiences(oratanyrateveryfewformsofreality).
