ABSTRACT

The school is necessarily concerned with the construction of official guided construction of knowledge. In schools, explicit verbal formulation in discourse is used by teachers as a fundamental tool in the development of educational knowledge. Teachers in schools and other educational institutions use language to pursue their professional aims and goals. In the early years of schooling, there should normally be no dramatic discontinuity between the commonsense knowledge of the home and the type of knowledge being developed in the school classroom. One of the main factors that will affect the child's development on entering into the formal education system is what actually goes on in the classroom. Developing an awareness of the talk that goes on in the classroom requires much more careful observation of what goes on, than in normal everyday circumstances. Classroom discourse, oral and written is one of the main tools for the construction of educational knowledge.
