ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the Australian Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) action research study as it illustrates a larger-scale externally supported project. The AMEP is a nationwide English language programme funded by the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs (DIEA), which has since been retitled DIM and implemented by AMEP-funded teaching institutions in each state and territory. The AMEP is a recognised site for innovative, learner-centred language English language teaching (ELT). The chapter sketches out the Professional Development Programme (PDP) project which took place at a historic moment of social and education renewal in Latvia. Its develops a network of local tutors and illustrates a low-cost initiative, the effectiveness of which derived from a clear vision of what was possible and the long-term support of local tutors as they developed their new skills. The chapter outlines a training resource pack designed for on-site use by secondary-school teachers: Preventive Approaches to Disruption (PAD).
