ABSTRACT

In planning outcome assessment projects, it is prudent to initially "think small" and look toward launching a pilot project of modest scope. The project team has the responsibility for obtaining consensus on the purpose of the project and helping to frame the assessment questions. Equally important to the success of an outcome assessment project is the interest and commitment of the clients and family members. Most organizations will find that even a small scale, pilot outcome assessment project is complex enough to require the support of a consultant. Undertaking outcome assessment requires attention to a number of pragmatic considerations, as well as conceptual, methodological, and psychometric factors, to ensure a successful project. Treatment outcome studies evaluate the impact a treatment program has on a client's clinical status and psychosocial functioning and provide an objective basis for the consumer's and purchaser's evaluation of the quality of care provided.
