ABSTRACT

At one point in his illustrious career, Niels Bohr announced that “Every sentence I utter must be understood not as an affirmation but as a question.” It is tempting to espouse this theme in a paper on mass psychogenic illness. For what is known about the phenomena is rudimentary and often ambiguous. Moreover, I am no expert on the topic. One ought to be a little suspicious that such denial attempts to deter criticism. So I do claim expertise in examining evidence on social problems and on purported solutions.
