ABSTRACT

This chapter describes trade name, classification, approved indications for psychological disorders, available dosage forms, storage, and compatibility, usual dosage and administration, relative contraindications, and clinically significant drug interactions of Benzphetamine. Generally benzphetamine pharmacotherapy is prescribed as one component of a comprehensive weight reduction program based on caloric restriction. Benzphetamine is a sympathomimetic amine that possesses pharmacologic activities similar to those of the amphetamines. Benzphetamine should be prescribed cautiously as adjunctive pharmacotherapy for the symptomatic management of exogenous obesity. Prescribe benzphetamine pharmacotherapy cautiously to patients who have histories of cardiovascular disorders, including mild hypertension. Caution patients who are receiving benzphetamine pharmacotherapy against performing activities that require alertness, judgment, and physical coordination until their response to benzphetamine pharmacotherapy is known. Concurrent benzphetamine pharmacotherapy with drugs that alkalinize the urine may decrease the urinary excretion of benzphetamine. Information regarding the signs and symptoms of benzphetamine overdosage and its related sequelae is extremely limited.
