ABSTRACT

This chapter describes trade name, classification, approved indications for psychological disorders, available dosage forms, storage, andcompatibility, usual dosage and administration, relative contraindications, and clinically significant drug interactions of Pentazocine. Neonates born to women who have received pentazocine pharmacotherapy, or regularly used pentazocine, during pregnancy or near term may display expected pharmacologic actions. Multiple intramuscular injections of the pentazocine lactate injectable formulation have been associated with severe sclerosis of the skin, subcutaneous tissues, and underlying muscle at injection sites. Pentazocine’s analgesic action occurs within three minutes after intravenous injection and within 30 minutes after intramuscular or subcutaneous injection. The duration of analgesia lasts for three to four hours. The analgesic action of 50 mg of orally ingested pentazocine is approximately equivalent to 60 mg of orally ingested codeine. Pentazocine is well absorbed following oral ingestion.
