ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a trade name, classification, approved indications for psychological disorders, available dosage forms, storage, and compatibility, usual dosage and administration, and clinically significant drug interaction of Risperidone. Patients who experience excessive drowsiness associated with their risperidone pharmacotherapy also may benefit from single daily dosing. For these patients, prescribe their daily dose for ingestion 30 minutes before retiring for bed in the evening. Safety and efficacy of risperidone pharmacotherapy for women who are breast-feeding and their neonates and infants have not been established. Avoid prescribing risperidone pharmacotherapy to women who are breast-feeding. The exact mechanism of risperidone’s antipsychotic action is complex and has not yet been fully determined. However, it appears to be primarily related to antagonism of dopamine and serotonin receptors within the CNS. Concurrent alcohol use may increase the CNS depressant action of risperidone. Advise patients to avoid, or limit, their use of alcohol while receiving risperidone pharmacotherapy.
