Introduction

Since the early 1970s, adult day care centers in the United States have grown from 20 to over 620 centers. Similarly, in Arizona, the Foundation for Senior Living, a nonprofit organization has pro vided adult day care services to frail and impaired elderly individ uals. From three centers in the early 1970s, the Foundation for Sen ior Living has developed a network of nine adult day care centers that serve urban and rural communities. This rapid increase in adult day care programs suggests that this is an important health care and social resource that has begun to fill a necessary gap in the long term care system (Pritzlaff Commission, 1984).
