ABSTRACT

This study focuses on adult day care and the effect of pet facilitated intervention on individuals isolated by dementing illness. Despite an abundance of anecdotal evidence that supports the value of employing pets for therapeutic purposes, only 3 controlled investigations in this area have been reported to date. While the authors are only able to contribute anecdotal observations at this time, we believe this evidence continues to support the therepeutic contribution that pets can make to participants in an adult day care center. In the absence of clear evidence of the effects of pet-human interactions, administrators of health care facilities act on the basis of intuition and personal experience.
